Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
