Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
