The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President Donald Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
