Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday because of the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
